The universal chamber is probably the greatest asset I have in my point sparring arsenal. It allows me to hide my next kick and setup the winning combinations that I use. It helps keep my opponents guessing on what techniques I’m going to be throwing next and allows for me to create openings where I can place my foot. Here are four things to consider when trying to utilize the universal chamber in point sparring:
- Be sure to have a proper guarding stance with your hands up and body turned sideways to your opponent.
- Bring your knee up in front of you with your leg at between 30° and 45° and point your knee directly at your opponent, perhaps just a little off of center.
- Be sure not to fully chamber before throwing a kick from the universal chamber and don’t fully re-chamber on combinations.
- Try your best to have your knee higher than your belt if possible. This will help with disguising your lower shots.
Remember that this is to help you with scoring points. You will still need to use strategy in your match. Start by reading your opponent throwing individual techniques. Once you discover the ways they react to your attacks, use the universal chamber and the proper kicking combination to exploit their opening! White the universal chamber seems like an easy concept, the best way to get better at it is to use it. Train, train, train, train, train! Once you start using it and start getting the hang of it you will feel more comfortable with it.
